Rapé or Hapé (pronounced Ha-pay) is a shamanic snuff that contains Nicotiana Rustica, a type of tobacco different than that used in cigarettes. It’s combined with the leaves, bark, and seeds of various medicinal Amazonian plants, then finely ground and strained through mesh to create a powder. This powder is blown into the nose of the recipient via a Tepi, a long pipe, with each unique combination of plants providing a different effect. The effects are immediate and may include grounding, an opening of physical and spiritual awareness, presence, clarity, insights, and cleansing of the body and mind. Rapé facilitators have received an initiation, as well as training on how to work with this sacred medicine.
